(RICHMOND HILL – August 4, 2021) – We have a new local star! The York Region Chinese community has honored Leah Taylor Roy, the Liberal candidate for the riding of Aurora – Oak Ridges – Richmond Hill, one of the fastest-growing Chinese communities in the country.

A special dim sum luncheon was held in her honor by the community at The One Fusion Cuisine at 9019 Bayview Ave. in Richmond Hill on August 4.

“I am always excited to meet with our Chinese community leaders,” said Taylor Roy, a successful entrepreneur, and business leader. “The Chinese community has a unique history in Canada and is playing an important role in the growth of the economy of the York Region,” said Taylor Roy. “I am proud to have them as such an important part of my team. It is important that we listen to their needs and interests because if we are to move forward as one, we must listen to everyone.”

With the re-opening of Chinese restaurants across the York Region, the Chinese community recognized Taylor Roy with the luncheon to acknowledge her support for the Chinese community. “Having this opportunity to share this lunch with other community leaders is a positive sign of our return to normal. I really missed the food, the people, and want to support the return of the many Chinese businesses in York Region.”

At the lunch, Taylor Roy was presented with her very own Chinese name. The name that was given to her is “莉雅泰勒” (Li Ya Tai Le), which has a combined meaning of: Everything goes smoothly and well, noble, respectful, and above the ordinary. It also represents the name of a flower which is common and there is a famous Chinese song called “茉莉花” (Jasmine Flower). The scroll was presented to her by Francis Yuen and was done by the very famous calligrapher Guan Shui Sheng.

Taylor Roy and her family have a long history of community service and friendship with the Chinese community in the York Region. She lives in Aurora and is the daughter of former Newmarket Mayor Tom Taylor and sister of current Mayor John Taylor. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University. During her business career, she worked for both the World Bank in Washington D.C. and McKinsey & Company across Canada.

“I know Leah,” said local resident Minnie Wang. “I like the fact that she is a business person who understands the social and environmental needs of our community.

“I have worked on, and been in, many campaigns in my life,” said former Provincial Minister Michael Chan. “By far, Leah is one of the best candidates that I have seen. She will thrive as Member of Parliament because she will do what it takes to advocate for all her constituents.”
